I have deep love and respect for the original vision of Mrs. Butt Sr. to create at Laity Lodge, not a chapel in the woods, but rather the “nicest living room in the Hill Country.” Her discernment about the suggestive power of architecture and space set the stage for retreats defined by their warmth, safety, and honesty under the influence of Howard Butt and Keith Miller.
I am a firm believer that at any given retreat, what happens outside or even underneath the Great Hall is as important as what happens inside it.
For several years we’ve been discussing the need for additional space at Laity Lodge appropriate for after-hours conversation and fellowship. With the help of some trusted friends and our gifted colleagues led by Glenn Echols, we are converting the Library space below the Great Hall into a more intimate and comfortable gathering place. The walls will still hold plenty of books, but in a much brighter and more open setting, with refreshments nearby and a large deck that will wrap around the entire room.
We hope the renovation will be completed in the next couple of months, and we can’t wait for you to enjoy this new space.

I can’t wait! I always loved the underneath-space there — one of my favorite places we introverts hide away. I’m sure you’ll make Mrs. Butt Sr. proud.
How thoughtful to provide this for us! I look forward to deep conversation and laughter in this space. I love that we can stretch out on a sofa or curl up in a chair and have conversation or enjoy silence. This new space will be much appreciated. Blessings!
Paul. Looking forward to some conversations with you down in the new space. It’s going to be really amazing.
Diane. We came up with the idea to create additional meeting space years ago, but many hands have been doing the heavy lifting to make it a reality. Not least of all our colleague, Glenn Echols, and his crew. Give us a few more weeks and then come visit.
Awesome idea…
I’ve stolen away to the “down under” a time or two myself! Surprised I haven’t run into Paul there. Can’t wait to see the results, Steven!
That “deck” looks a lot like a diving board
So excited for this addition. It will bring a great dimension to the Lodge.
Amazing to think you’ll have yet another place to relax there.
