After two months of dormancy while the Frio River Canyon has been closed to visitors, we were at last able to dispatch photographer Wendi Poole to the Lodge to capture the current state of things. She arrived to find the place “incredibly green and slightly wild in a really cool way.”

Her photographs present nature nearly unchecked: a vine winds up between the boards on the Library deck; plants voluntarily sprout in-between steps; a solitary wildflower blooms in the parking lot. And while people have been scarce, the bees, butterflies, snakes, and lizards are having the run of the place. The meadows are in bloom, and it’s clear there is more to come. With rain in the forecast this week, we expect to find even more color when Wendi returns.
