Why is it called Laity Lodge?
“Laity” comes from a Greek word that means “of the people,” and in common parlance designates those who are not clergy.
What does the registration fee cover?
All meals, programs, and lodging are included.
What are the accommodations?
Laity Lodge has three different guest room buildings: the Lodge, Black Bluff, and Cedar Brake. Each offers something unique while maintaining a consistent level of quality.
May I request a particular building/room?
Our Registrar makes housing assignments based on program needs and availability. If you have a preference, you can note that in the comments section of your registration.
Do you have accommodations for special needs?
Please indicate any special needs on your registration. ADA rooms are available. The kitchen will happily try to satisfy any dietary restrictions. Just let us know.
What time do the retreats start?
Unless otherwise indicated, arrivals begin at 4:00 p.m., retreats begin with a reception at 6:15 p.m., and they conclude at noon on the last day of the retreat.

What activities can I expect at a retreat?
Laity Lodge retreats follow a relaxed rhythm that makes space for connection, reflection, and rest. Mornings often include thoughtful teaching, small group conversations, and time to be alone. Afternoons are open and unhurried, offering opportunities for recreation and renewal—whether that’s hiking, canoeing, paddle-boarding, kayaking, fishing, reading, playing pickleball, or simply taking a nap.
You’re also welcome to browse the Laity Lodge bookstore, which features a rich collection of thoughtfully curated books to inspire and delight.
Will my mobile phone/computer work?
To help you fully enter into the rhythm of retreat, there is no cell service in the Canyon and no telephones, televisions, or internet access in guest rooms. Limited Wi-Fi is available in and around the Great Hall, should you need to connect briefly.
How can I be contacted in an emergency?
Call Reception at 830-291-8640. Our staff will relay the message promptly.
Can I bring my children? Pets? Firearms? Tobacco?
While Laity Lodge is designed for adults, we gladly welcome high-school-aged children to attend retreats at the same registration rate.
If you require a registered service animal, they are welcome to accompany you (please be in touch with us about details). We ask that all other pets remain at home.
For the safety and comfort of all guests, please do not bring firearms to the Canyon.
If you smoke, we kindly ask that you refrain from doing so in guest rooms, on porches, or balconies. We trust you’ll help us maintain a peaceful and respectful environment for everyone, especially in shared spaces.
What is the relationship between Laity Lodge and the H-E-B grocery store?
Laity Lodge sits on a 1,900-acre ranch purchased by Howard and Mary Holdsworth Butt in 1954. Howard was the president of the grocery company, which his mother started in Kerrville in 1905. In 1961, Laity Lodge took shape under the direction of their son, Howard Butt, Jr., and now the third generation, Deborah and David Rogers.
What is your cancellation policy?
If you cancel 14 days or more before the retreat begins, you’ll only be responsible for the $100 registration deposit.
If you cancel fewer than 14 days before the retreat, you’ll be responsible for the full cost of the retreat. Unfortunately, we’re unable to offer refunds during this time frame, except in cases of medical emergencies or other circumstances beyond your control.
