Why is it called Laity Lodge?
The name ‘Laity Lodge’ reflects our core belief about who we serve and why we exist. The word laity comes from the Greek laos, meaning “the people.” It’s traditionally used to refer to those who are not clergy—but at Laity Lodge, it reflects something deeper: that every person, regardless of role or title, is invited to live a meaningful life of faith.
Laity Lodge exists to encourage and equip the people of God—all people—for lives of purpose, reflection, and renewal.
What does the registration fee cover?
Your registration fee includes all meals, lodging, and program experiences throughout the retreat. Once you arrive, everything is taken care of—so you can simply rest, reflect, and enjoy.
What are the accommodations?
Laity Lodge offers guest rooms in three distinct buildings: the Lodge, Black Bluff, and Cedar Brake. Each space has its own character and setting, but all provide a consistent level of comfort, thoughtful design, and elegant simplicity. Wherever you stay, you’ll be surrounded by beauty—with space to rest and reflect.
May I request a particular building/room?
Our Registrar makes housing assignments based on program needs and availability. If you have a preference, you can note that in the comments section of your registration.
Do you have accommodations for special needs?
Yes. If you have any accessibility or dietary needs, please let us know when you register—we’re here to help. We offer ADA-compliant rooms, and our kitchen staff will gladly do their best to accommodate dietary restrictions or allergies.
What time do the retreats begin and end?
Unless otherwise noted, check-in begins at 4:00 p.m. on the first day of the retreat. We’ll gather for a welcome reception at 6:15 p.m., followed by dinner and our opening session.
Retreats typically conclude by noon on the final day. To give yourself time to travel at an unhurried pace, we recommend not booking flights out of San Antonio before 3:00 p.m. on the day of your departure.
What is the typical retreat schedule?
This sample schedule represents the design of all Laity Lodge retreats. Every retreat is unique, however, and the official schedule for your retreat will be posted in Reception. Note: for 3-day retreats (Fri-Sun), simply substitute the Thursday schedule for Friday’s.

What activities can I expect at a retreat?
Laity Lodge retreats follow a relaxed rhythm that makes space for connection, reflection, and rest. Mornings often include thoughtful teaching, small group conversations, and time to be alone. Afternoons are open and unhurried, offering opportunities for recreation and renewal—whether that’s hiking, canoeing, paddle-boarding, kayaking, fishing, reading, playing pickleball, or simply taking a nap.
You’re also welcome to browse the Laity Lodge bookstore, which features a rich collection of thoughtfully curated books to inspire and delight.
Will my mobile phone/computer work?
To help you fully enter into the rhythm of retreat, there is no cell service in the Canyon and no telephones, televisions, or internet access in guest rooms. Limited Wi-Fi is available in and around the Great Hall, should you need to connect briefly.
In case of an emergency, how can I be contacted?
If someone needs to reach you during your retreat, they can call our Reception team at 830-291-8640. We’ll make sure the message gets to you promptly.
Can I bring my children? Pets? Firearms? Tobacco?
While Laity Lodge is designed for adults, we gladly welcome high-school-aged children to attend retreats at the same registration rate.
If you require a registered service animal, they are welcome to accompany you (please be in touch with us about details). We ask that all other pets remain at home.
For the safety and comfort of all guests, please do not bring firearms to the Canyon.
If you smoke, we kindly ask that you refrain from doing so in guest rooms, on porches, or balconies. We trust you’ll help us maintain a peaceful and respectful environment for everyone, especially in shared spaces.
What is the relationship between Laity Lodge and the H-E-B grocery store?
Laity Lodge is part of the H. E. Butt Foundation, which was founded by the same family behind the H-E-B grocery company. In 1954, Howard and Mary Holdsworth Butt purchased the 1,900-acre ranch that is now home to Laity Lodge. Howard was president of H-E-B, the Texas-based grocery company started by his mother in Kerrville in 1905.
Laity Lodge was established in 1961 by their son, Howard E. Butt, Jr., as a place for spiritual renewal and reflection. Today, his children—Deborah and David Rogers—help carry the vision forward into a new generation.
What is your cancellation policy?
If you cancel 14 days or more before the retreat begins, you’ll only be responsible for the $100 registration deposit.
If you cancel fewer than 14 days before the retreat, you’ll be responsible for the full cost of the retreat. Unfortunately, we’re unable to offer refunds during this time frame, except in cases of medical emergencies or other circumstances beyond your control.
